The Newport Social Ethics Research Group combines research and teaching in a range of fields in the social domain, with special emphasis on political, social and ethical theory – and on the points of intersection between these areas. At the heart of the Group’s concerns is the aim of bringing theoretical debates and developments to bear on contemporary social trends, policies and controversies. Our specialist interests include:
- Distributive and social justice
- The welfare state
- Disability rights
- Professional ethics
- Toleration and multiculturalism
- Equality
- Human rights
- Migration
- Democracy
- Authority and legitimation
- Environmental ethics
- Healthcare ethics
Members of the Research Group are involved in the teaching of these and other subject areas on various undergraduate degrees at the University. We have recently launched a new, innovative MA degree in Social Ethics and Public Advocacy. PhD researchers within the group have worked on projects including environmental ethics, the situationism of Guy Debord, the politics of disability, and the social implications of death in relation to questions of personal identity.
We are interested in PhD proposals in any of the areas listed above, whether singly or in combination. We are periodically in a position to offer bursaries, though typically our students are funded by outside bodies.
